ITSIG Convenor’s Report 2005

As in the previous couple of years the ITSIG Committee held occasional teleconferences through the course of the year supported by the LIANZA audio conferencing facilities.

ITSIG sponsorship at LIANZA 2004 Conference of keynote speaker David Seaman was successful. David provided insight into international library developments in information technologies from his perspective as Director of the Digital Library Federation. He was also guest speaker at an ITSIG Workshop chaired by Paul Sutherland, that covered a range of topics including institutional repositories, federated searching and the NZ Digital Strategy. Committee members noted (1) disappointment that time allocated to David’s keynote speech was reduced because of Conference announcements (2) discussion in the workshop was not as robust as at the previous year’s workshop, possibly because of its more structured nature.

The SIG continued its annual $1000 sponsorship of a member to an Australian Library IT Conference. This time it was awarded to Ruth Lewis, Electronic Resources and Reference Librarian, Landcare Research, who reported back via Library Life and a personal blog on the Sydney Online Conference. The Committee noted that the number of applicants was not large, although the sponsorship was advertised on ITSIG and NZ-Libs listservs. Ongoing sponsorship to be discussed by the next committee

ITSIG was promoted to Distance MLIS students at a Course introduction in Auckland early in the year. The decline in membership numbers is concerning. It is likely to be related to the lack of visibility by the SIG on the NZ Library landscape. This could be rectified by a more proactive approach — ITSIG organised events and greater discussion of Library IT issues on the listserv. Some preliminary work was done on organising a series of ITSIG workshops around the 4 main centres. This could be taken up by the new committee.

The Wiki received occasional spam attacks which required clean-ups by Brenda Chawner. An offer was made to host the Wiki with the LIANZA web site. This is under investigation.

The Annual Treasurer’s Report was posted to the Wiki by John Laurie, to be presented in person at the AGM. A new Convenor and Committee were to be elected at the AGM during the LIANZA Conference, following an ITSIG Workshop - “The Technology Challenge: Keeping up with Trends and Issues”.
