ITSIG Convenor’s Report 2006

This has been a quiet year for ITSIG with committee business being carried out by email, and during two teleconference sessions.

During the 2005 LIANZA conference in Christchurch, ITSIG hosted another of its popular conference workshops. Paul Sutherland, as he has done for several years, chaired the session and I thank Paul for this. Topics included Blogs, Auckland University’s Early New Zealand Books project, the use of PDAs with web sites, ‘bookmarklets’ and ‘mycroft’, Institutional Repositories, and Social web sites.

ITSIG once again offered sponsorship to an ITSIG member to attend an Australian Library IT conference. The amount was $800. This year it was VALA and Amanda Brown from Christchurch City Libraries was the successful applicant. Amanda’s report was circulated to the committee, published on the ITSIG WIKI and also in Library Life. As for 2005, few applications were received, but the committee considered the sponsorship an activity worth continuing when funds permit.

Membership increased this year and the LIANZA office now sends out regular lists of members which is useful. Although only used once this year, this does provide the opportunity for ITSIG to communicate directly to its members, rather than just through the ITSIG list. However, as has been the case for some years, many of the members do not take an active role in ITSIG, and there are many more librarians involved in IT, than belong to the SIG. There is now more opportunity for publicity with Library Life being open to regular SIG articles, and the promise (yet unrealized) of a SIG having more control over its part of the LIANZA web site. During the year Brenda Chawner continued to maintain the ITSIG Wiki which, despite the odd burst of publicity, still attracts little use. We can but hope that it is at least providing some with useful information. Brenda recently incorporated conference tips in the Wiki – these should be useful for new and experienced alike and may introduce more people to the Wiki.

Brenda represented ITSIG at meetings with LIANZA, and Paul attended the New Zealand Digital Content Strategy on behalf of ITSIG.

The committee for this year has been:

Auckland: John Laurie, Bob Pearson – both University of Auckland
Wellington: Brenda Chawner (VUW – School of Information Studies), Daphne Dashfield (National Library)
Christchurch: Paul Sutherland (Christchurch City Libraries), Andrew White (Lincoln University), Peter Kennedy (University of Canterbury)

I would particular like to thank John Laurie for his work as treasurer.

Peter Kennedy
2nd October 2006.
