ITSIG Convenor’s Report 2011
ITSIG Committee members in 2010 were John Laurie (Convenor, University of Auckland), Bob Pearson (Treasurer, University of Auckland) Peter Kennedy (University of Canterbury), Paul Sutherland (Christchurch City Libraries ), Helen Brownlie (University of Otago), Paul Hayton (Dunedin Public Libraries) and Kim Salamonson (Hastings District Libraries). Thanks to these people for their contributions.
ITSIG has had an active year with some significant new activities, in particular the bar camp held in conjunction with the 2010 LIANZA Conference and two online webinar series. Membership remained steady, with 116 people and organisations listed in the LIANZA spreadsheet of March 17th, 2011. $968 was received in subscriptions.
Numbers were down at the LIANZA Conference workshop. The previous keynote speaker ran over time and there was no time for lunch before the workshop. Brief presentations were given by Brian Flaherty (University of Auckland) on stitching costs of discovery layers, and Helen Brownlie (University of Otago Library) on changing discovery experiences. There was no time for a third presentation or to hold the AGM. The Annual General Meeting was held online on 26th January 2011. Notice was circulated to members via the IT-SIG list and there were ten members in attendance, just enough for a quorum. Paul Hayton of the Dunedin Public Library, joined the committee.
The bar camp at the LIANZA conference attracted considerable interest. The main topics were e-books, discovery layers and metadata standards. The cost of the bar camp was $1646.73 of which $900 was recovered in registrations from attendees. Thanks to Helen Brownlie, Paul Sutherland and Kris Wehipeihana for organising this event.
An inaugural webinar series was presented in June and July using the KAREN Scopia platform. John Laurie (Digital Initiatives Librarian - University of Auckland) talked about Image Digitisation and the Exlibris Digitool platform, Sam Minchin (Digital Services Coordinator Central - Auckland Libraries) about Digitisation Projects at Auckland Libraries, Jacob Powell (Media Librarian, University of Auckland) on delivering Audio and Video files at the University of Auckland, and Kim Shepherd (Library Digital Development Analyst and Programmer, University of Auckland) on automating text editing for large files. An average of 20 people watched each session.
A second series in October saw presentations from John Garraway (Digital Services and Information Commons Manager, University of Auckland) on managing digitisation proposals, Bob Pearson (Digital Access Librarian, University of Auckland) on techniques for Ezproxy administrators, and Stuart Lewis (Library Digital Development Manager, University of Auckland) on Superindex and Skylight. 37 librarians attended these sessions and a number of others indicated interest in viewing the recordings.
The IT-SIG wiki has been updated with reports on the bar camp and links to online videos and power points for the webinars.
Monthly committee meetings continued to be held online, also using the KAREN Scopia meeting platform.
IT-SIG members have been asked to help with the APLM (Association of Public Library Managers) ‘Travel lite this summer with an ereader’ roadshow.
The usual IT-SIG workshop will be run at the 2011 LIANZA workshop on Monday 31 October, 12:30pm - 1:30pm, with five-minute presentations from Paul Hayton (Electronic Services Coordinator, Dunedin Public Library) on Facebook and Twitter, Paul Sutherland (Digital Innovation Librarian, Christchurch City Libraries) on E-books and public libraries, and Brian Flaherty (Associate University Librarian - Digital Services, University of Auckland Library) on the changing discovery landscape. This will be followed by discussion from the floor and the Annual General Meeting.
