This topic covers public computer facilities including facilities for Internet access, CD-ROM access, access to other databases, word processing and other applications. It may cover all library sectors although there may be some differences between academic and public library situations for example.
Aspects that could be covered are charging, censorship, security, policies for access or acceptable use, types of services offered (eg Internet, email, word processing), data storage (eg hard disk, floppy disks, CD writers), booking systems, print management, session management (timing software), proxy services and vendors/service providers. Hardware and facilities for public access to catalogues can be included here - public access catalogue (PAC) software is probably better covered under Library Management Systems. Information may fall naturally into two main categories - policies (what you provide and what you allow) and technical (hardware and software systems).
There have been a number of times when libraries planning public access services have sought information from other libraries on the ITSIG or other mailing lists. If all NZ libraries contributed and maintained up-to-date information about their services here, it would make it much easier for other libraries planning services to get the information they seek.
Go on – tell us about your services. Internet Charges in New Zealand public libraries lists information about access, charging, and policies.
Have you surveyed other libraries on aspects of their public computing services recently? Post the results here.
