A union catalogue is a single database recording the holdings of a number of different libraries. The prime example in New Zealand is the National Bibliographic Database hosted by the National Library of New Zealand in Te Puna.
A virtual union catalogue is a system that searches different library catalogues and consolidates the results thus simulating a union catalogue. Virtual union catalogues frequently utilise the Z39.50 protocol for searching the different catalogues.
